SERVPRO of Kaufman County / Mesquite professionals have the equipment, training and experience to find and dry unseen water before secondary damages occur. 7/9/2020 (Permalink)

According to the Mayo clinic, "Hoarding disorder is a persistent difficultly discarding or parting with possessions because of a perceived need to save them. A person with hoarding disorder experiences distress at the thought of getting rid of them items. Excessive accumulation of items, regardless of actual value, occurs." Many people with hoarding disorder do not find their habits to be a problem.

Hoarded items are often things others would throw away or look at as junk or garbage such as old newspapers, junk mail or packaging.

Hoarding can lead to homes filled with extreme clutter to full capacity from years of accumulation, making living conditions unsanitary and crowded. Bugs, fleas, rats and other vermin may be present, at which point an exterminator would need to be called. At times, hoarding may be spread to outside the home as well, to storage facilities, or even the garage or yard.

Often, a SERVPRO of Kaufman County/ Cedar Creek professional is called for a fire or water loss and find the hoarding situation when they arrive on-site. A SERVPRO of Kaufman County/ Cedar Creek professional will communicate with the insurance company regarding their contents coverage, and after approval, contents can be packed out and possibly cleaned, dried, and stored by SERVPRO of Kaufman County/ Cedar Creek, or relocated to a storage facility so work on the fire or water loss can begin.

Another way SERVPRO of Kaufman County/ Cedar Creek encounters hoarding jobs is through calls from landlords, case workers, real estate agents, or family members, often after the death of a loved one. In these situations, the crew will see if they should look for any items of importance while they clean the job. Sometimes, family members will come and try to help the hoarder sort through their contents as well.

Each case is very different, and hoarding jobs are often sensitive situations, but SERVPRO of Kaufman County/ Cedar Creek professionals are here to help make it "Like it never even happened." If you encounter a hoarding situation at one of your properties, or with your insureds, call us today! (972) 524-3894

Help Protect Your Property With Prevention Tools

7/7/2020 (Permalink)

Because undetected water can cause a great deal of damage to a building structure and its contents, many property owners are investigating in water detection systems. Water leak detection systems are available to help identify leaks, which can help prevent them from becoming floods. Water monitoring systems are typically activated at the first sign of seepage or moisture resulting from leakage. Help protect your commercial or residential property by utilizing a water monitoring system.

Water Alarms: Water alarms, also known as leak -sensors, are typically battery-operated stand-alone systems containing a moisture sensor that will activate and audible alarm when moisture is detected. Benefits of water alarms include accessibility and price. They can be places in basements or sum pumps, under sinks or near individual appliances such as washers, refrigerators, hot water heaters, etc. and are fairly inexpensive and easy to install. Some water alarms will actually shut off the water once a leak is detected, while others will simply sound an alarm to notify you of a leak. This particular water monitoring device is only beneficial if someone is inside the building to hear the alarm and take appropriate action to stop the leak.

Water Systems: While most water alarms simply notify you of a leak, water systems will actually shut off the water supply causing water damage. Individual appliances systems are installed in specific appliances and will automatically shut off the water supply in the event that the appliances has a leak. Whole house systems operate in a similar fashion except that the shut-off valve is installed on the main water supply line versus and individual appliance. This system is the most popular and beneficial to homeowners that travel often or reside in multiple properties seasonally throughout the year.

Managing Mold Damage in Your Residential or Commercial Property

7/7/2020 (Permalink)

When there's a water intrusion, like a roof leak or leaking water line, mold can quickly become a problem in your home or business. Mold can cause health effects and can also cause significant damage to your property. Fortunately, SERVPRO of Kaufman County/Cedar Creek technicians have the training, protective gear, and specialized equipment necessary to handle your mold problem. Call SERVPRO of Kaufman County/Cedar Creek Professionals

The mold cleanup and restoration process begins when you call SERVPRO of Kaufman County/Cedar Creek. A representative will ask a series of questions to help determine the necessary equipment, resources, and personnel needed.

Inspection and Damage Assessment

Your property will be carefully inspected for signs of mold using technology designed to detect mold and hidden water sources. Mold feeds on cellulose and water and can be hidden from plain view.

Mold Containment

Various containment procedures will be placed to prevent the spread of mold and isolate the contaminated area with physical barriers and negative air pressure to keep the mold spores from spreading during the cleanup process.

Air Filtration

Specialized filtration equipment captures microscopic mold spores out of the air. SERVPRO of Kaufman County/Cedar Creek technicians will utilize powerful air scrubbers and HEPA vacuums to prevent the spread of these mold spores while the mold remediation is in process.

Removing Mold and Mold-Infested Materials

The mold remediation process depends on the amount of mold growth and the types of surfaces on which the mold appears. Anti fungal and antimicrobial treatments will be used to eliminate mold colonies and help prevent new colonies from forming. Removing and disposing of mold-infested porous materials, like drywall and flooring, may be necessary to remediate heavy mold growth.

SERVPRO of Kaufman County/Cedar Creek professionals understand mold and mold growth and have the training and equipment to remediate mold in your home or business.

SERVPRO Industries, Inc. also recently opened the doors to its “Flood House.” This fully-furnished, six-room structure helps to host the IICRC-approved Applied Structural Drying school, one of only nine such school in the entire country.

The truth about mold

4/17/2019 (Permalink)

Mold occurs naturally throughout the environment- both indoors and outdoors. In fact, mold spores could probably be found in nearly every structure in the United States, regardless of how new or clean the structure is. That's because mold is no more dangerous than dust or pollen.

Even though some forms of mold can add value to our lives, other forms can be harmful. Excessive amounts of mold, different types of mold and/or exposure to molds may present health concerns for some people.

If there us an ongoing moisture problem in your office, your home, or in your customer's home, it is important to be alert for:

  • The presence of visible mold
  • strong, musty odors which may indicate mold is present
  • Any evidence of past moisture problems that might have cause mold growth

Mold has existed since ancient times. The human species has always lived in the presence of mold. There are over 100,000+ species of mold identified. The unique flavor of bleu cheese is produced by mold.

We are constantly exposed to thousands of different types of fungi in our everyday lives. Certain types of fungi tend to exist naturally in soils, plants, fruits and textiles. Exposure to these fungi in naturally occurring doses is generally not harmful to health.

While the types and concentrations of fungi existing in the environment vary from one geographic region to another, the most common types are as follows: Aspergillus (most common), alternaria, bipolaris, chaetomium, fusarium, penicillin, and paecilomyes.

Mold Needs The Right Environment To Grow
Water, moisture or high humidity.
Food (any organic substance)
The right temperature (generally 68*F-86*F, but some can grow in 30*F or colder)
Lack of Ventilation
Mold presents greater challenges to young children, the elderly and other immunosuppressed people.
Some molds can produce toxins if the environment conditions are right.
