Fire Extinguishers: How-To

2/18/2022 (Permalink)

A lineup of different fire extinguishers. Make sure you've got the right fire extinguisher for your home or business.

In cold weather conditions, you'll probably want to find some way to heat your home or business, whether it be turning on the heater or lighting a fire in a fireplace. Sometimes, though, accidents can occur and a fire can flare up. In the event of a fire breakout, you'll want to keep a fire extinguisher on the premises to prevent things from getting too out of control. In order to operate a fire extinguisher, the National Fire Association suggests remembering the word PASS:

Pull the pin. Hold the nozzle pointing away from you and release the locking mechanism

Aim low. Point the extinguisher at the base of the fire

Squeeze the lever slowly and evenly.

Sweep the nozzle from side to side.

Read the instructions on the fire extinguisher and become familiar with them before a fire breaks out. Remember, extinguishers do have limitations. It is also important to ensure you have the correct type of extinguisher for your facility. Remember, knowledge can stand between you and an incident that can threaten your home or business.
